Visions Of Healing
Mmatsilo Motsei's book, "Hearing Visions, Seeing Voices" captures the imagination. It is a beautifully and poetically written autobiographical text which journeys through Motsei's quest for healing and humanity. Her training in nursing, psychology, counseling and traditional healing informs her analysis of the sources violence. The text unpacks how capitalist and patriarchal violence has retarded progress, and calls for men and women to " eradicate the negative effects of patriarchy and sexism on our individual and collective psyche". Motsei writes about personally surviving domestic abuse, and the pain of healing and forgiveness. She has worked with both survivors and perpetrators of abuse and embarked on healing methods that use "a concept of healing that recognizes the effect of violence on both the victim and the offender, as well as their families and the community". Through her work and experiences, Motsei has been convinced that in order to break the cycle of violence, we must reach within ourselves and access the wisdom of African values and ancestral beliefs. The wisdom that acknowledges the need for balance between the emotional, physical and spiritual facets of existence, and takes care to honestly and courageously address disruptions. Motsei takes her cue from Biko and others who have spoken about the lessons that Africa is teaching the world, lessons on the need to cure humanity's wounds and create a reality where peace, humility and freedom reign. |
